Physical Activity Challenge
An alternative to the walking challenge is to use time spent performing physical activity as the mode for your fitness
competition. Here, participants record the total time spent undertaking physical activities and log it into a journal.
Results of the participants’ journals are then tallied and compared to determine the winner.
The next question with this type of challenge is what constitutes a physical activity? You may either leave that up to
your participants to determine, set specific exercises such as walking, weight lifting, etc., or provide examples of
approved activities. Of the three options, the third is probably the best since the first is too open and may lead to
certain participants bending the rules while the second option is too restrictive and will limit participation. By setting
a list of activities as guidelines, you can maximize participation with limited problems. A list of activity examples
might look like the following:
- Walking dog
- Gardening
- Vacuuming / house cleaning
- Weight lifting
- Playing ball with kids
Since this list could go on indefinitely, you should emphasize that these are just examples and that any activity
requiring a significant amount of movement counts toward his or her participation.
